Unit 5: Classification
Classification
What are the distinguishing
characteristics of the three domains?
How can you determine the kingdom
into which an organism can be
classified?
How have classification systems
changed over time?
Linnaeus developed a two word scientific
name for each organism called binomial
nomenclature.
Organisms are classified by characteristics
and their DNA/genetic make-up.
Hierarchy of classification: domain, kingdom,
phylum, class, order, family, genus, and
species.
Characteristics of Domains: Bacteria,
Archaea, and Eukarya.
Characteristics of Kingdoms: Bacteria,
Archaea, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and
Animalia.
Explain why it’s important to classify
organisms.
Explain how classification systems have
changed over time.
Describe the distinguishing characteristics of
the domains and kingdoms (ADV: emphasis
on Linnaean system).
List the hierarchy of classification from
broadest to most specific.
Given an organism’s characteristics, determine
the appropriate domain/kingdom to which it
would belong.
Analyze how new scientific information may
change an organism’s classification.

Don't forget that the classification system now starts with Domain, but to great of a video not to share :)
